Users of illicit anabolic steroids may have impaired testicular function even years after they stop using the performance-enhancing drugs, a cross-sectional study suggested. This is the first study to examine the association between illicit steroid use in young healthy individuals and alterations in testicular volume.Researchers at the University of Minnesota and Columbia University in New York, found that those aged under 20 years who used illicit steroids at least six times, or seven of 22 different types of illicit steroids used in this group, had smaller testicular volumes and that their testicular volume was lower a year later.Lead author Dr Mark Jones said: "In a large sample of healthy participants, we find that anabolic steroids use is associated with smaller testicular volumes in men from ages 20 to 29. However, our results were independent of demographic information, and we are now exploring the relationship of illicit steroid use to size of the testes in young men."He added: "It is possible that those who use illicit steroids have lower testosterone when young and are more likely to seek out a doping service than those who have not used these drugs. Alternatively, the relationship may simply be the consequence of the use of illicit steroids."Regardless of the reason, our results provide important information regarding potential adverse effects of this drug."According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, more than 8 per cent of American men report use of illicit steroid drugs, while another 25 per cent are unaware. Other drugs linked with testicular problems include amphetamines, meldonium and the drug methamphetamines, which is often purchased via the internet. It is understood that most of these individuals do not have physical impairments like testicular cancer, meaning they may not notice any physical change.Dr Jones added: "The results of this study show that the use of illicit steroids in young healthy men, although uncommon, continues to have a large public health impact and should be considered by clinicians and practitioners."He also said he and his colleagues are currently examining whether other drugs can affect the sexual health of young males via their testicles, which could make it easier for them to become hooked on them. The team's findings were published in the British Medical Journal.Similar articles:
